Certainly not – solo travels are a great way to spend a vacation and probably it is more relaxing anyway if you follow your own schedule. Especially in Italy you will find a variety of things to do by yourself, so do not be scared of booking your flight tickets to this southern European country! We show you the best destinations when traveling to Italy alone.
1. Rome
The Italian capital is a perfect place to start your journey when traveling to Italy alone. With its historic importance in entire Europe and fascinating architectures that are partially still around, Rome won’t let you go unimpressed. You might have heard that Rome is not a safe place to be by yourself and in fact there is a lot of pick pockets going around the touristy places, looking for some unwary travelers. However, you can greatly reduce the risk of being robbed by just watching your valuables. The robberies mostly take place during the daytime and without anyone noticing, so if you get an extra belt bag for your belongings you can most likely enjoy the beautiful city of Rome by yourself. Make sure to visit one of the famous Roman baths in town to feel what people thousands of years ago felt.
2. Bologna
If you are traveling to Italy alone, the city of Bologna in the north of Italy could be a great destination to visit. It kind of has a big city life combined with ancient and originally Italian elements where it is easy to meet new people. Actually there are many travelers from all over the world who also do not know anyone in town. Joining a walking tour around the famous sights of Piazza Maggiore or St. Stephen Basilica is therefore a good way to both explore the place and also meet some new friends.
3. Venice
Going to Venice by yourself? You might ask yourself why we put Venice on the best destinations when traveling to Italy alone since it is mostly renowned as a city for couples. From our own experience, Venice is a very beautiful city but quite overrated for any stay longer than 2 days – perfect for a short solo stay! The little pathways with hundreds of bridges that help pedestrians cross the old canals are in fact worth exploring and at times you really feel like in a movie. The scenery is so beautiful that there are even casinos which copied the design of the city and built “Venice Worlds” inside of huge buildings. For a 1- or 2-day stay, Venice is a great solo travel destination in Italy and being on your own can be very useful especially in crowded places. It is much easier to find your way through thousands of people if you do not always have to look for your friends or partner and also, you can try all the delicious foods you want such as the famous local crepes.
4. Cinque Terre
Along the Italian coast in Liguria, there are five lovely fishermen’s villages that are named “Cinque Terre”. Easily accessible by public transport, this place is attracting more and more travelers due to its unique location and views as well as the original Italian lifestyle. For solo travelers, it makes sense to plan at least 2-3 days here since there is plenty to explore and do. Each fishermen’s village basically has its own character so you could already spend a lot of time on getting to know them. Even more intriguing for a day trip are the hiking trails around the villages that give you some of the most beautiful views you could get on Italy’s coasts – and probably those are also quite enjoyable if you are just by yourself.
5. Florence
When traveling to Italy alone, Florence is a very suitable destination with its amazing cityscape and truly Italian atmosphere often even called the gem of Tuscany. Due to its attractiveness to tourists, there are plenty of hostels available here and it is a good idea to make use of that whenever you can find it in Italy. Not only do the local hostels provide you with valuable information about good places in English (which is sometimes rare to find in Italy), but also it is much easier to connect with new people if you want to explore the city with someone else. With lots of exchange students and expats living in Florence, you will also easily connect to people in the local bar scene. Especially during the night time you might get feel like a few hundred years back in time in the traditional narrow streets – but still it is quite a safe place to be by yourself.
6. Siena
A perfect little Italian city to explore by foot, Siena has some amazing foods, stunning architectures and – some say – the most friendly Italians you could find. Even though most of them do not speak English, you will not get lost here as the inhabitants of Siena are happy about people from other countries showing interest in their place. It is quite easy to get around the city and even without Italian skills you should not have a problem navigating if you have a map with you. Maybe you will not be socializing as much here as in other bigger cities, but the cultural experience you can make here is definitely worth it and maybe even better if you just visit by yourself.
7. Amalfi Coast
Similar to Cinque Terre, the Amalfi Coast close to Naples features multiple small villages directly at the sea in the Italian south. Thousands of Instagram photos have been posted from places such as Positano or Capri Island and you do not have to worry that reality wouldn’t match the beauty from pictures.
