Europe is on the bucketlist of many travelers and with its many beautiful cities, the continent is a perfect place for solo adventurers. Most European countries have their very own culture, so there is plenty to explore and little room to get bored if you are just by yourself. Most likely, you are not able to see the whole continent at once and it might be difficult to prioritize, so we looked into the best places to travel alone in Europe!
1. Budapest
Today’s capital of Hungary came into place when the cities of Buda, Pest and Óbuda merged, which were only separated by the Danube river. Nowadays, Budapest probably belongs to the most underrated cities in Europe and from a recent trip, we can totally recommend it for both groups and solo travelers. Especially welcoming are the seasons of summer and autumn, when you will find many people on the street enjoying some cold (and cheap!) drinks right at the river. With its many sights such as the Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion and the fun Szechenyi Spa you can easily spend 3 days by yourself in this beautiful city which takes a spot among the best places to travel alone in Europe.
2. Praque
Moving westwards, the city of Prague has been of great historic importance especially during the Middle Ages, and keeps attracting tourists from all over the world. In fact, there is especially a high density of solo travelers pursuing a good time and tasting the vibe of the Czech capital. It is really easy to connect with other locals or tourists and the city is a great mix of nice architecture, very low prices (a beer is often cheaper than Coke) and a fun nightlife.
3. Berlin
If you think about traveling alone in Europe, Berlin is “the place to be” – that’s also how the city is branding itself. The capital of Germany is one of the most diverse places in Europe, with each district having its own atmosphere. Nowadays, Berlin has also developed to a European startup-hub so besides libertines you will also find a lot of people who want to turn ideas into reality and are really eager to meet new people. The city belongs to the biggest ones in Europe and has a very unique history, so you can easily spend a week there, with the nightlife being particularly fun. The bars and clubs probably rank at the top of the European scene and if you think that clubbing alone is not fun, most people lose their friends in there anyway – so just dance the night away!
4. London
The city of London has a long history and nowadays offers a rich mix of culture, business opportunities and fun to people from all over the world. Especially for Asians, London is a popular destination with top universities and English as the official language. When you are traveling alone in Europe and go to London, you might want to pack some comfortable shoes because you can walk A LOT there. Of course, the royal atmosphere can be felt in many places around the city but more than that, traditional sights, parks and theaters make any stay here worthwhile. If you ever get bored by yourself, you can also join a walking tour through London or take a daytrip to the university cities of Cambridge and Oxford!
5. Edinburgh
Still in the United Kingdom, the city of Edinburgh certainly belongs to the best destinations for traveling alone in Europe. If you are lucky, you will only have rain once per day, but the very charming and traditional city scape really makes up for it. Visit the castle and try some haggis if you can, before making your way to Arthur’s seat in the mountainous areas. The wide landscapes are a good getaway from the big city life and are a great opportunity especially for solo travelers to free up your mind.
6. Dublin
Ireland with its capital Dublin and the surrounding areas are a unique combination of great nature, big city vibes and pure Irish culture! It might be a bit colder than in other European cities and also slightly rainy, but a stay of a few days to dive into the city and especially its nightlife is a great thing to do! You might know some Irish pubs in your hometown, but in Dublin’s Temple Bar district it is just another level and really fun if you give it a try. The city has a lot of hostels available, so you can easily meet new people when you are by yourself and they also organize tours to some spectacular trips such as the Wicklow Mountains or the famous Cliffs of Moher, where parts of Harry Potter were shot.
7. Paris
Of course, Paris must not be missing among the best destinations when you are traveling alone in Europe. The city is one of the few really outstanding places on the continent with a turbulent history, beautiful architecture and a very original culture. The number of sights you can find here is countless and spread across the whole city, so you will have no hard time thinking about how you could spend your days just by yourself. Explore Montmartre with the Sacré-Coeur, take a walk along the Seine and relax in the greens around the Eiffel Tower – a perfect place for any solo adventurer!
8. Barcelona
Further in the west of Europe you will find Barcelona at the Mediterranean Sea. Come in summer or autumn and you do not have to worry about not having the best time ever! As a solo traveler, you have the full flexibility of doing whatever you want and that’s especially important in the city of Barcelona with all the great food places. If you felt like it, you could just spend the whole day eating delicious tapas and seafood or wander through the big market hall, but there is also lots of sights to see such as the Sagrada Familia or Parc Güell. As the city is located right at the sea, you can also just relax and enjoy the sun, so make use of your solo situation and just do what you want to in this fun Spanish gem!
